Purple bunny traditions

Many many many moons ago it was my birthday. I can't even remember which birthday it was but I am guessing I was around 3 or so. Maybe even before that. But for my birthday my parents got me this bunny.

Gotta love the 80's
I cannot remember life without this little one. I slept with her every night if I didn't have her we weren't sleeping ( Sorry Kris I love you!!!!) She was the coolest. All the stars would glow in the dark, her eyes would look like she was sleeping I couldn't tell you how many time I was yelled at for leaving her laying across the top of the lamp shade. She got the best light up there and would glow forever. Apparently its a fire hazard haha who knew!!!  I have tried on many occasions to give her a name but always ended up calling her purple bunny. I guess that was her name and I never knew it. Well I kept and slept with her for many many years. I grew up and grew out of sleeping with the bunny. But couldn't dare part with her so I packed her away with all the other momentos I wasn't ready to get rid of. Time moved passed , school came and went, I moved here and there, Kids came. In the midst of a move I found the box with purple bunny and lots of other childhood fun.

Here is my bunny. In need of a bath but you can see she has some wear  on her but over all in good shape.
Well I gave my bunny to my daughter.  She instantly took took her. She cannot sleep without her either. The funny part about it all is that she calls her purple bunny also. I guess after all these years and all those times trying to give her a name other then the obvious. Purple Bunny was the right name all along. I hope that purple bunny hangs around long enough so my daughter can give it to her children. I dont have many things to pass along ( I am sure that will change as time goes on,) but I really hope this can be one.

Here are a few other things I found that brought me back to my childhood.
Jacks !!!!!!!
I couldn't tell you how many hours I sat on my kitchen floor or outside on the side walk playing with these guys for hours. I love jacks. I may even play some when the kids go to sleep haha.

Pick-up sticks
This is my game haha!!!! I love pick up sticks. Add this to one of my favorite games ever!!! The simplicity of  the games back then lol. The object of the game is to pick up a stick without moving any others in the process. Definitely spent lots of time playing this game also  haha.

My sister and I used to play these alot!!!!!! She used to kick my butt in it too haha. She used to have way more then I did probably because I only wanted the "cute" ones haha lol so we would trade and I would give her all the ugly/scary/dark ones .

Oh the simplicity of it all

Thanksgiving party

The holidays are coming up and I cannot wait. I am so excited. I love this time of the year. I love the cooler weather, the family gatherings and all the yummy yummy food and flavors that only come out this time of the year. I am so excited. So for thanksgiving my daughter wants to throw a thanksgiving party so here are a couple  ideas that I found. That I am so going to do.

How cute is he?
We always have little snacks set out and a veggie turkey tray is adorable !

Home made butter for the kiddos

How fun would it be to make homemade butter with the kids. They each can get their own jar and make their  own and eat it with dinner. I love this idea! I know that my daughter loves making just about anything with me. She is such a little helper in the kitchen. She would love this. She also loooooves butter ( chalk that up to my husbands grandmother, she was a butter fiend also.) So she will definitely enjoy this. I cannot wait.
I love this!!! I don't know why but I absolutely love the corn. Its the simplicity of it all that looks super cute!!!!!

I am sure that I will come up with some more ideas. I still have a month to go. Who knows what I will come up with. I can't wait!!!

Pumpkin Butter

Its that time of year again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS FALL or in other terms pumpkin season :D I love all things pumpkin. All year round. I love it. I even had pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese icing at my wedding (that recipe is to come). So in the midst of my fun in the kitchen. I found pumpkin butter and I had to try it. I would like to add that I did not can my pumpkin butter I froze it. All of the research I have done is coming up with inconclusive results on if its cannable at home or not. Pumpkin is a low ph food therefore it should not be canned at home. Some people have canned it in a pressure canner and swear by it. Others have water bathed canned it and swear by it. I on the other hand am not going to risk botulism for pumpkin butter lol. I love pumpkin but not that much. So please before you take this recipe and make it and attempt to can it. Do your research. I froze mine and It will last way longer then it will actually stay in the freezer (we eat it too quick) Freezing it does not change the flavor or quality of the butter at all. With that being said lets get to the good stuff.

Pumpkin butter yum yum yum.

4-4.5 cups of fresh pumpkin puree (about 4lbs of pumpkin)
1/4 cup sweet apple cider or juice
1 cup brown sugar
3-4 tbsp pure maple syrup, to taste
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp fresh lemon juice (enchances flavor and helps preserve)
1 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of sea salt

1. Steam or roast pumpkins. Cool for about 10 minutes and remove pumpkin flesh from the skin.
2. Add flesh (without the skin) in a food processor, add juice and blend until smooth ,stopping to push down pumpkin when necessary, add more juice if needed.
3.Add the brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon and nutmeg. Process again until smooth. (I added maple syrup and tasted it and added more. I am not a huge maple fan so I didn't want it to be to maple-y)

4.Spoon mixture into a medium sized pot, Cover with a lid and prop lid ajar with a wooden spoon. Over medium-high heat bring to a low boil. Reduce heat to a medium low and cook for 10 more minutes or until desired consistancy. Keep the lid ajar but covered. It will be hot and it splatters everywhere.Remove from heat and add vanilla.
5.Cool completely, stir in lemon juice and salt. Store in a sealed jar in fridge will last up to 4 weeks. Store in freezer for up to a year.

this stuff is absolutely amazing!!! I am in love. I already have some in the freezer and I am probably going to add to it so I can have it all year round!!!!!!

Its been a while

and I have been a blog slacker. I loved blogging and was doing good everyday or a couple a week well then I got busy and totally neglected it :( But I am determined to come back and climb back into the blog saddles. She is becoming more and more a little person everyday :(. My son is breaking teeth like crazy. He has 6 right now and working on 4 more. He is going to walk any day now. Its crazy how fast they grow they definitely are right when they say time flies. I have been great a busy little bee in the kitchen. So we will have lots of yummy recipes to come. I have mastered a amazing Angel food cake (OMG!!!!) a super tasty multi-grain brain. I have been a canning monster. Salsas, pickles, jams, jellys, apple and pumpkin butter. I need to rearrange my canning shelf. So be prepared for that one too! I am getting myself ready for the holidays. I am so excited I love the holidays and cooler weather. It doesn't get too cold and stay cold here in florida. But the past two days I haven't had my AC on so that is always exciting!!! I am so excited to get back to blogging !!!!!!!!!!!!! There is lots to come.................

Yes I am still here...

I have not been ignoring the blog but  I have been neglectful. These past few weeks have been crazy for me. We had the bug guy come and do his bug spraying thing. So I was able to get my kitchen out of totes and back in my cabinet's. Yeahhhhhh. Despite this being very annoying and stressful. I gave me the time to clear house and get rid of all the excess we did not need. Which is always exciting!
I was able to get into my holiday/ party stuff and got all of that organized. In the process of doing this I came across two things. One I am SOOOOO EXCITED for the fall/ winter holidays coming up. Cooler weather. Fall colors Pumpkin everything. The smell of cinnamon. OOOO I cannot wait! And two  I am so ready for another party. While looking all my different theme party decorations. I am ready to get down with my bad self ( ha ha corny I know but still) In the midst of all of this my Chickens started laying eggs :D I know its so exciting and tasty. I was able to watch one actually lay the egg which was really cool.

Those little ladies are laying 4-6 eggs a day.I don't think we realized exactly how much we were gonna get but with my baking and the holidays coming up I am not concerned! With all of this the littlest man in the house has started pulling himself to standing which is just one step closer to walking which is one step closer to really keeping me busy. The fun is starting!!!!! Things around here have been super hectic and busy. By the time the day is winding down and both kiddos are in bed so I am I. Now that things are settling back down and I have some moments to breathe this mama is going to get crafty and start visiting the best room in the house. The kitchen!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay tuned with the first day of autumn approaching fast I have found lots of fall inspiration , and I am so excited!!!!!!

Busy little bee

I have been major slacking on my blog posts lately. It has been a while since I have posted but I have been a busy little bee :D I have been working on getting the house together and organized and just the way I want it :D. The past two weeks I finished up the pantry. Cleaned out the closet ( sent three trash bags to thrift store :D ) Went through the rest of the house. Filled the whole car up with some lovely thrift store donations. I came up with some game plans for ideas on what I want to do in the bathroom and the family room. The past two days have been very productive. We took apart our bed set, and have decided to re-purpose it. We used to have a wall unit. I loved the bed but with the size of it we can only put it on one wall in our room and I was ready for a change and started thinking !
Identical to this one. But different wood color
Well we took it apart and brought the two side pieces out into our family room for some craft storage. I think I am going to take the mirror apart and put it in our bathroom and frame them.
Here is the finished product. I think I may change the color of the desk at some point or just leave it not quite sure yet lol. Ignore the floor all of that is coming up later on. One step at a time.

I organized all of the crafty stuff and put it in the shelves. This way I can clear room on my desk and keep it up high away from the kiddies. ( I have lost most of good markers and a good chunk of stickers thanks to my little one)

I decided to take the piece of the bread here is the before shot. I am planning on taking the feet off of it and upholstering the top and putting it at the end of the bed. I think I am going to change the color of it once I figure out the room colors ha ha  I am going to use it like a linen chest. I am super excited for this!!!!!

We have come up with lots of ideas for the house so I am sure there will be a pintrest board about it soon! I am so excited to be getting this house together! Its getting more homier everyday. ( Well not right now , there's alot of stuff outta place right now! But its getting there )

Baby step two

So my pantry had no organization. It had some general organization but that's it. A baking shelf a pasta shelf a snack shelf etc. Other than that it was madness lol. So in my determination I am conquering my pantry. I should of taken some before pictures but I wasn't but the after pictures really make me happy.

I moved all my appliances that I use up on to the top shelf to clear up the space on the floor underneath the shelves. Which I put my daughters stairs underneath so she would stop scaling the shelves for snacks. ( I got those stairs at a thrift store for three bucks. It has a cover but it was in the wash I think they were for a dog and the weigh is up to 70lbs. my daughter isn't even half that ha ha lol ) I vacuum sealed my pastas to clear up all the boxes and put them into bins. The blue one is all my stabby pasta and the white one is my twirly pasta. I love my vacuum saver I sealed all my twirly pasta up and there is around 10 lbs of pasta in that basket. I created "snack boxes" for everyone in the house. That way when Abby wants a snack she goes and gets her box and chooses what she wants I have one for my husband and Max ( even though he is older he still has a spot for all his goodies) I then expanded my baking shelf over and put all my bulk baking supplies over there.  With as much that I use and as cheap as I can find it ( gotta love my husbands work lol we get a bunch from there.) I buy them in bulk and store them in buckets that I get from my husbands job. I still have my jars that I pull down and bring to the kitchen when I am baking those buckets just store my extra :D

I had alot of random little things floating around that just end up here there on the floor etc. (boxes of jello, chocolate chips. keurig cups)  So I put them all in labeled boxes also. I have a shelf for the rest of my baking stuff. All the odds and ends that you use when baking. I have a snack and condiment etc shelf. ( not really sure what to call the shelf but it has the nuts and popcorn the condiments my rice and egg noodles that didn't fit on my pasta shelf my homemade jams and salsas) My cans and then my Tupperware at the bottom, With of course my husbands protein . You would not believe how excited I am for this. I love it love it love it!!!!!!!!

All things vanilla

and when I say vanilla I mean vanilla not the imitation stuff you see in the stores. I love vanilla I haven't always liked it and I never used it much other then in baking, and then I will admit I used the imitation stuff. I got married a year ago and at my wedding we had vanilla bean cupcakes ( let me just say yummmmmo) When I find the recipe I will post it for you guys. The recipe called for vanilla beans. While on my hunt for them at the store I realized two things one you can only really buy them two at a time , two they are expensive the cheapest I found was 9 bucks for 2 beans. I needed way more than two. I ended up finding them at a good price online. I even got a 1/4 lb of Tahitian vanilla beans for free. Score!!! Wedding came cupcakes made and I still have a bunch of vanilla beans left so I found some very tasty recipes for the leftovers.

Vanilla extract:

Take a cup of vodka ( you can also use rum if desired)
2-3 vanilla beans

Using a paring knife. Cut the bean starting 1/2 in. from the top and slice it all the way to the end. Do the same to the remaining 2 beans. Place the beans in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Add the vodka and push the beans down until they are completely submerged. Seal the jar and store in a cool dark place for at least a month. Shake the jar once a week. The flavor will get stronger as it sits. You will see the vodka turning a nice dark amber color. Flavor should be good and perfect to use after about 2 months. As you use it up you can top the jar off with more vodka replacing the beans as they lose flavor ( normally around 3-6 months)

Vanilla sugar: ( probably one of my favorites)

2 vanilla beans
2 cups of sugar

Using a paring knife cut the vanilla beans down the middle from end to end. Scrap the seeds out and put both the pods and the seeds in a airtight container with the sugar and shake. Add more sugar as  you use to the sugar. As you use vanilla in other recipes throw the scrap pod into the sugar instead of throwing it out. Shake once a week.

I use the vanilla sugar in all baking recipes in my coffee in just about everything!!!!! I love it and it smells Divine.

Vanilla salt:

make just like the sugar but use salt instead of sugar. You can use this baking recipes also. this is also good for adding some sweetness to more savory dishes. This is great on fish and chicken.

Vanilla coffee:

Blend dried pods with fresh coffee beans, or stick some dried pods in your jar of instant coffee

Vanilla tea:

Cut up a pod and mix with tea leaves. store in a air tight container and let mature for a few weeks in a cool dark place.

Now that you know of some super yummy things to do with vanilla beans DO NOT THROW YOUR USED PODS AWAY. There are so many more uses for them. All of my used pods go right into my vanilla sugar. Throw them in your sugar, salt, coffee ( grind em up) or leave em in the container. Explore the many wonders of the vanilla bean!!!

These are just some of my favorite things to do with the beans if you know of any other things that are good and yummy leave a comment let me know I always love new things to try.

Under 100 calorie doughnuts

My daughter had been begging for a doughnut. She loves them and if they have sprinkles she is even happier. But the amount of sugar and the calorie contents makes those tasty little O's all the more reason to stay away. So I found a recipe online for low calorie doughnuts and they are delicious.

3 tbsp butter or margarine,softened
¾ cup of sugar
3 eggs
1 cup applesauce
1 tsp vanilla extract
4½ cups all-purpose flour
3½ tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ ground nutmeg
¼ cup milk
oil for deep frying
additional sugar

In a mixing bowl cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time beating after each addition. Beat in applesauce and vanilla.
Combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg ; add to creamed mixture alternating with milk (the batter will be thick do not be alarmed)
In a fryer or a pot heat oil to 350f. Drop teaspoons of batter into hot oil. Turning with a slotted spoon until golden. (about a minute or two on each side)
Drain on paper towels, Roll in sugar while warm

Best eaten warm.

Here are few shots of the ones we made today not the best shots but I was rushing and packing them up for my husband for work. We rolled ours in sugar and some in powdered sugar. If I had more time I would of done a glaze for them. These would also be super super yummy rolled in a cinnamon sugar and dipped a icing ( but i think at that point they wouldnt be under a 100 calories haha )  These were huge. I am sure I can make them smaller but would eat more. So made them a decent size had one and was content. Oh I forgot to mention my house smelled delightful after making these. I am definitely going to make them again!. Make sure you eat them while they are still warm. These are going to go in the keep pile for my recipe book.

Homemade Tortillas

Its burrito night at the Oscavich house!!!!

and we have no tortillas. Just my luck. But it turned out for the better. I made my own. With everything that I already had in the house. They are delish way better then store bought. Here is the recipe with some pictures. Super easy and super yummy.

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour for dusting

1. Whisk flour, salt, and baking powder together in a large bowl. Add vegetable shortening and work into flour mixture using a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse crumbs.( i used my kitchenaid because I do not own a pastry cutter.)

2. Form a well in the middle of flour mixture and mix in hot water. Work flour and water mixture together with a fork and transfer to a cutting board.

3. Knead until a smooth soft dough is formed about 3 minutes. Add more flour if dough is too sticky.

4. Place more flour on cutting board and cover dough with bowl. Let rest for 15 minutes.

Here's my dough ball (sort of)
5. Cut balls of dough into eight equal parts and cover until needed.

6. Roll out balls of dough in a circle

this is probably the only one that made it to a circle
7. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place flattened tortilla in a skillet and cook until it begins to bubble, about a minute. Flip tortilla over and cook for an additional minute. Flip again and cook for one minute. Repeat with remaining dough.

Finished product I am sure I could of cooked them longer but I like mine light. These were super super yummy. Even the hard shell taco lovers in the house loved these. I will never go back to store bought.

Baby step one

So I figured in my journey to a clean organized house I am going to start in my bathroom and bedroom. The way I see it is that if I have a nice quiet clean organized place to call my own I will be less stressed looking at the rest of the house. Sounds like a good plan, right? I started in the bathroom. I got it nice and cleaned and vacuumed. Yes vacuumed ( as soon as I get the chance the carpet is going to go lol. ) Here is my plan for the bathroom. With some before pictures. (The after hasn't happened yet )

I think I am going to keep this pretty much the same. May change the light out at some point but not really a priority

Going to take down the shelves on the wall. May re-purpose them not quite sure just yet. They just become a catch all for the random stuff that doesn't really have a home I want to get a hamper sorter for laundry to put over there. Possibly one with a rack about it so I can hang the hubbies clothes for work. I also need to find a spot for mr dragon table to live. Not going to get rid of him but his time in my bathroom is done :D I need to go through the closet and get it slimmed down some it is my stockpile of  make up and extra shampoos and medicines and such. I need a spot for towels instead of the neat pile next to the tub.

New curtains!!!!!!!! Going to try and get the squares off the mirror from the tub the bottom ones are coming off and look flakey. So probably just get rid of them. and have a plain mirror.

I want to do my room in a beachy theme so I will probably extend it into the bathroom also. Get some decor and some paint not sure what color yet. But the potential is there.

Stay tuned for more updates.

This past year has been a whirl wind.

My husband and I got married.

                                                                                                                                               He got a new job

He spent a few weeks back and forth between Tennessee and Florida. We got pregnant with our beautiful son. We started adjusting to married/pregnant life, and then we moved. I packed and unpacked a whole house super pregnant.
I still had ten weeks to go in this picture.

Then the little one was born.

I started adjusting to life as a stay at home mom with a three year old and a newborn. Six months later and  needless to say my house is for lack of better words. Controlled Chaos.
My house is in dire need of some mom love ! So I am determined to get this house together bit by bit no matter how long it takes.
So my plan is to do something everyday. No matter how how small. Let it be a whole room or a closet. I am going to this house together organized and decorated how I want it !

Stay tuned for progress !!!

Soft Pretzels

Its summer time, and that means soft pretzels and water ice ( well to me it does.) You see I grew up in NJ and Philly, and when summer rolled around it was weeknight trips to Rita's and The pretzel factory . Yummmm. So tonight I decided to pull out the recipe I found a few years ago. I relocated to FL. with family in high school and after a few years of eating the crap frozen and pop in the oven pretzels. I was determined to find a great soft pretzel recipe. And I did.

Soft Pretzel Recipe
1½ cup warm water
1 1/8 tsp yeast
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 1/8 tsp salt
1 cup bread flour
3 cup flour

2 cup warm water
2 tbsp baking soda
4 tbsp melted butter

Sprinkle yeast on lukewarm water in mixing bowl , Stir to dissolve. Add sugar, salt, and stir to dissolve ; add flour and knead dough until smooth and elastic. Let rise at least ½ hour.

While dough is rising, prepare baking soda water bath. Mix 2 cups of warm water with 2 tbsp of baking soda. Be certain to stir often.
After dough has risen, pinch off bits of dough and roll into a long rope ( about ½ inch or less thick) and shape into desired pretzel shape.

Dip pretzel into baking soda bath and place on a greased cookie sheet. Allow pretzels to rise again. Bake at 450f for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Brush with melted butter and enjoy!

(This can also be make in a bread machine, add the first set of ingredients into bread machine pan and run on dough cycle. Continue as followed. )

I top my pretzels with coarse salt before baking for a nice salty pretzel. You can top with Cinnamon and sugar and dip in icing for a sweeter treat. The options are endless

    Eggless brownies ????

I got the hankering for something sweet. Then it hit me BROWNIES!!!!! I went to go make brownies and realized I have no eggs. How do I have no eggs. So I got on google and started searching . Found a recipe for eggless brownies. Hmmmm lets try em :D

    Here's the recipe:

    ½ cup sugar
    ½ cup mashed bananas
    12 tbsp flour
    2 tbsp hot water
    pinch of salt
    3 tbsp butter
1½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips
    1 tsp vanilla
    ¼ tsp baking soda
    1 tsp baking powder

    - Heat oven 350F/180C.
    - In a bowl, sift the flour with baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    - In a microwavable bowl, add the chocolate chips and butter. Melt in the microwave and set a side. ( I don't have a microwave so I used a double boiler)
    - In a different bowl, add the sugar, banana, 2 tablespoons hot water, vanilla, and the chocolate mixture. Whisk the mixture well.
    - Add the flour mixture to the already mixed wet ingredients and stir until well combined. Don't over mix.
    - Pour the mixture in a greased baking pan. I used 11"x8" you can use a smaller pan.
    - Shake the baking pan gently, just to remove bubbles if formed and even the surface.
    - Bake brownies for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with very few crumbs.
    - Leave the brownies to cool in the baking pan, let it cool at room temperature. Don't touch the surface of the brownies.
    - When it cools, refrigerate it for an hour before cutting it.

They turned out okay. Its like a chocolate covered banana brownie. They are very very chocolately. Almost fudgey  I added a little carmel and nuts and they were yummy.  I think I could probably add some applesauce or a different fruit instead of the bananas ( not a chocolate banana fan) but they have potential. A fun little baking experience :D I think I will try eggless brownies again. and tweak it a bit

    Homemade flea shampoo

Here are my two muttleys . They are two boxer shepherd mixes . Their names are Lana and Sassy.  They are a little over a year old and they drive me bonkers :D But I love them. They  have recently became friends with the dogs down the street and those dogs are infested with fleas. Well now my dogs are too. So while my husband was home today we decided to give the dogs a bath and low and behold we only have enough flea shampoo for one of the dogs. Great!

So I got to searching around and I found this and decided to try it.

    Homemade Flea and Tick shampoo

    • 4 cups of water
    • 1 cup of dish soap
    • 1 cup of white vinegar

Mix well in a bowl or bottle. ( I didn't have a bottle big enough for it all so I did it all in a bowl)

      and its done!!! So simple.

I stored mine in a old creamer bottle it filled it up one and half times. So it makes enough for a few washes.

We washed the dog with it. It is a runny soap but lathered well and surprisingly our dog doesn't smell like vinegar.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!! We started washing her and the fleas were running lol. I am not sure how well it is going to do on repelling them but as for killing them and getting them off of her. It worked wonders. I am never buying flea shampoo again. This was so easy and cheap to make and I had everything in my house already.

Now if I can keep them away from the neighbors dogs or teach them to wash theirs we will be good  :D
